Putangirua Pinnacles, New Zealand

Updated: Feb 22, 2019

It's not often you get to do something that is 100% free but this one is! The Putangirua Pinnacles located in Cape Palliser, Wairarapa are a must-do attraction. It has star quality too - Peter Jackson filmed here for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King so we've been wanting to do this walk for ages!

It was the most stunning day when we went, sunny and not a cloud in the sky. Even the drive out there was spectacular. After a compulsory stop at Clareville Bakery, we parked up, grabbed our packs and headed out. There are a couple of walks to choose from. You can either head to the look out or up the streambeds to look up at the pinnacles.

We started with the walk to the lookout, it didn't take particular long but it was steep in parts and uneven under foot. We were in trainers so not the most sensible shoe choice! I would recommend some comfy boots if you have them, my ankles were buggered by the time we were done.

To be honest, once we got up to the viewing platform lookout, both MJ and I were a little underwhelmed. We had seen a lot of photos and being up high, you just didn't get that sense of wow. We were a both a bit like "is this it", which was a shame. Anyway we had a bite to eat and decided to head back down and approach it from the streambeds.

Thank god we did! This view is far more 'wow' that it was from the top. The rock formations up close are pretty incredible. Sadly by the time we got to those, we were both exhausted and our feet were killing. MJ REFUSED to walk any further haha so we ended up abandoning.

We saw enough to see what all the hype was about and were definitely glad we did it.
